Statistical Software Workshops – Spring 2013

Posted by rutgersdata on January 17, 2013

I will be holding a series of workshops on the statistical software packages R, SAS, and SPSS.  This Spring, all workshops will be held at the Library of Science and Medicine on Busch Campus, on Monday afternoons starting at 3:30 pm.  See below for details about each workshop.

SPSS is a popular statistical software system in the social sciences.

The “Introduction to SPSS” workshop is for students who are new to SPSS.  In this workshop, students will become familiar with the SPSS interface and its basic functions of managing data, doing statistical analysis and generating graphs. For the workshop, students will learn to use SPSS for Linux through remote access to Rutgers X Application Server (apps.rutgers.edu), which is available to all students.  Menus and commands are similar to Windows versions of SAS.

Introduction to SPSS will be held on Monday, January 28, from 3:30-5 pm in the Library of Science and Medicine’s Special Collections Room.

SAS is a powerful and long-standing statistical software system.

The “Introduction to SAS” workshop is for students who are new to SAS. In this workshop, students will become familiar with the SAS interface and its basic functions of managing data, doing statistical analysis and generating graphs. For the workshop, students will learn to use SAS for Linux through remote access to Rutgers X Application Server (apps.rutgers.edu), which is available to all students.  Menus and commands are similar to Windows versions of SAS.

Introduction to SAS will be held on Monday, February 4, from 3:30-5 pm in the Library of Science and Medicine’s Special Collections Room.

R is freely available, open source statistical software that has been widely adopted in the research community.  The  three-part workshop series, “An Introduction to R” covers

  • Statistical Techniques: Descriptive Statistics, Regression, Significance, Finding Additional Packages (Monday, February 11)
  • Graphics:  comparison of graphing techniques of basic R, lattice, and ggplot2 packages (Monday, February 18)
  • Data Manipulation:  Data Import and Transformation (Monday, February 25)

All three workshops will run from 3:30-5 pm in the Library of Science and Medicine’s Special Collections Room.  Each part is self-contained, but if you are new to R, all three will be beneficial.  The first workshop on Statistical Techniques will include a brief discussion of getting started with R (installation, basic command structure, etc.).  Please bring your laptop if you have R installed, or you can use laptops provided for the session.

In addition there will be a special topics session on Time Series in R, covering basic methods for handling time series data.  This session assumes basic knowledge of R equivalent to that covered in the introductory workshops.

  • The Time Series in R workshops will be held on Monday, March 4, from 3:30 to 5 pm in the Library of Science and Medicine’s Special Collections Room.

All R workshops are hands-on.  R software is available on the IHL lab PCs, and you can also bring your own laptop if you have R installed already.

Further information about R, SAS, and SPSS, including workshop materials and other tutorials is available on the Rutgers Data Libguide.  Click on “Software” to find the materials.

There is no need to register for any of these workshops – first come, first served!
